AJR Discuss The Importance Of Taking Little Breaks From Music

iHeartRadio ALTer Ego 2018 - Red Carpet

Adam, Jack, and Ryan Met first began making music together in their family's living room in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. Soon, that sparked the brothers to busk in Washington Square Park and eventually make enough money to buy their own recording equipment. From there, they recorded and released three albums, including their latest Neotheater, and tour the world as AJR. But when they're not busy writing music, the siblings focus on schoolwork — Ryan, 25, and Jack 21, are undergraduate students at Columbia University and share an apartment together near campus. Adam, 28, is a Ph.D. candidate in international human rights law at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom; however, has been on a yearlong fellowship at Columbia. With so much time spent together, the brothers recently chatted with The New York Times about how they keep things fresh.

"Music is No. 1 for us, but we all realize it’s really important to take a break, daily, and focus on something else," Jack explained. "That’s pretty much the main reason Ryan and I decided to keep studying film — you have to have this moment of the day where you completely forget about the music. Then you can come back to it with a fresh mind. Ryan and I will start writing a paper about a film or we’ll write a scene for a movie. Adam goes back downtown [where he lives with his girlfriend.]"

That being said, AJR have been hard at work planning their next tour, and spend three hours together every Sunday to brainstorm ideas. They hit the road in June, after playing at this year's BottleRock Festival in Napa, California. Check out their full list of tour dates here.
